STEM - Math

At GP Academy, our Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program integrates mathematics into our daily content delivery, our curricular themes and other activities throughout the year. Children gain a deep understanding of early mathematical concepts through free exploration and discovery, manipulation of materials, and direct instruction. Our students are taught to reason, gather data using their senses, find patterns, compare, investigate, communicate and connect their ideas in a way that helps them make sense of the world around them.

Mathematics is the global language of how and why. Our primary goal is that children will develop a positive approach to mathematics and gain self confidence in their abilities to problem solve in their daily lives while making connections with the real world. GPA’s written, taught and assessed curriculum ensures that natural progression of skills is evident from the daycare to a more formalized primary prep program in kindergarten.

The GP Early Advantage Curriculum’s approach to math is based on the Common CORE’s eight mathematical practices:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
